American painting, sculpture, and literature each have their own characteristics and unique development histories.

In the early days, American painting was influenced by Europe, such as the works of Singleton Copley and Benjamin West, whose techniques were European-style. In the first half of the 19th century, romantic landscape painting was introduced, and American painting gradually developed local characteristics, such as Jay Moore’s waterscapes and Joseph Michael Todorovich’s works that showed natural and psychological narratives.

There is the famous Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is carved with four presidents. It was completed by Gutzon Borgnum in 14 years. However, some sculptures have caused controversy, such as the “hug” Martin Luther King Memorial Sculpture, which has a grotesque shape, and the Robert E. Lee Statue, which is considered a symbol of racism because it represents support for slavery. Related statues in many places have been toppled or removed.

Influenced by Europe in the early days, the themes were mostly religion and history, with a deep imprint of Puritanism. After independence, it matured, with Washington Irving’s “The Notebook” and Mark Twain’s humorous and satirical works as representatives. Modern literature is diversified, with Hemingway’s style being concise and tough, and Toni Morrison exploring the issues of black people in the United States.
